Sheep’s Teeth

The size and setting of a sheep’s teeth have a considerable influence on their length of useful ■ life; Under similar grazing conditions, narrow teeth do not last as well as wide ones, and undershot jaws also wear down rapidly. Narrow teeth and undershot jaws are probably of hereditary origin. Among other faults commonly 1 noted is a notching in the central inCisiors. This fault is more common on improved pastures, and records taken at Massey Agricultural College show that central teeth erupting and remaining slightly overlapped tend to develop this defect. The number of teeth erupted is a poor guide to the age of sheep. Little evidence is found to support the theory that teeth erupt early on country which carries poor mouths, or that mouths with early-erupted teeth v/ear out more rapidly than others. '
