Would-Be “Shell-Backs”
Filled with enthusiasm at the prospect of / signing on a deep-sea sailing ship, about 50 young New Zealanders have applied* personally or written from many parts of the Dominion for work as deck boys on the four-masted barque Pamir since her arrival at Auckland. The interest in sail has extended to men serving in steam and several on coastal ships have signed off their vessels in the hope of joining the barque as able seamen.
