Heavy Work A gang of workmen had a heavy task yesterday laying a thousandwire cable across the Strand in front of the Post Office. This new cable is designed to carry the extra load of the new exchange which is expected to be in- operation in November. When the trench was dug across the street, there was a tough haul to get the weighty cable across. Death Sentence Quashed The death sentence the Beacon passed on Agave Americanus, the cactus at the base of Pohaturoa Rock, when it flowered early this year can now be washed out. It isn’t going to die, or it would have ,'d jiie so ere this. We asked another authority on that sort of thing what he Ihought about it, and he says it does flower only once in a hundred years, but it does not necessarily die of the effort. Only other place he had 9een any was Rousilon, southernmost province of France.

Thanks, Whakatane! A letter of warin appreciation of this district’s effort in the recent United Nations appeal for Children has been received by the local treasurer, Mr L. D. Lovelock. The district was heartily thanked for its handsome contribution in comparison with its population. Wheat Growers Thanked “To be a wheat grower today is to be among the great company of those who not dnly realise the importance. of the world’s problems, but who are doing something about it. There has never been a time when the need has been more urgent for ‘putting the hand to the plough.’ ” These words were, used by the chairman of the Aid for Britain National Council, Mr F. P. Walsh, in a special message to wheat growers.
