Parcels —Their End

As the elderly people left the depot, some shuffled a little, and one man more than eighty years of age peered shortsightedly about him. But every one of them was obviously excited. On reaching the street the men and women—they were old-age pensioners—looked up and down the road more or less self-consciously. Then, in the order that they came out of the depot, they went to a low wall nearby and carefully placed the parcels that they were carrying on the top. Almost with reverence, they opened the parcels and looked inside. There was a moment of suspense, and then a joyful discussion of the good things inside the parcels before the group moved on. These people had just received food parcels from New Zealand and the scene was at Commonside, Sheffield.
