“Manuka Blight”

Faced with the otherwise laborious and costly operation of clearing manuka from vast areas of deteriorating land, the Gisborne provincial executive of Federated Farmers, with many other branches of that organisation in New Zealand, has asked for information concerning the possibility of introducing “manuka blight” from South Canterbury. Because of the wide interest displayed and in order to give some authoritative , information on the subject, the Department of Agriculture has assigned a special officer to investigate the position. Until‘this officer has made his report and the department is in a position to advise farmers interested in the subject, it is suggested that no good purpose is likely to be served by widespread introduction of infected material from South Canterbury. In’ any case it should be remembered that it has not yet been definitely established that the scale insect or. this insect together with the secondary infestation of mildew is the actual cause of the death of considerable areas of manuka in South Canterbury.
