NO SUPPORT FOR RESCINDING OF WATER LOAN PROPOSAL MOTION: Cr CREEKE AND MAYOR DISAGREE
When he sought, at Monday’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council,.to have the motion to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for sanction of the £25,000 waferworlto loan rescinded, Cr J. Creeke got no support at all. His motion lapsed for want of a seconder.
Cr Creeke complained that objections to the proposal had been treated with contempt, he accused the Mayor of taking too long to call the promised public meeting, and said he wanted the motion rescinded until after that meeting. He considered “the door had been closed” to the objectors. Mr Barry claimed the Council’s procedure was strictly correct. Objections had been called for and had been sent to the Loans Board. That was all the Council was required to do. Objectors would have a chance to vote against the scheme when a poll
was taken. So far as the public meeting was concerned, he had promised that, and he would keep his promise, but in his own time. Cr Creeke reminded Mr Barry he had claimed the waterworks scheme was urgent, but had allowed 30 days to pass and had not called the meeting yet. The Mayor explained that, though the water scheme itself was urgent, the public meeting was not necessarily so. He assured Cr Creeke it would be held, and ample notice of it given so that all who wanted to hear the proposals explained and offer objections to them could attend.
