CRAMPED LIVING CONDITIONS AND EFFECT ON YOUTH
> Reviewing the conditions that are affecting the present generation of children in New Zealand, Professor C. L. Bailey, Professor of Education at Victoria College, said to the Wellington School Committees and Educational Association in Wellington there-had been a greater shortage of houses. In his boyhood there had been plenty of open spaces in which children could get out of the way of their parents. Today the' family shrinkage has had a decided effect upon children. In the cities there was a sense of strain, which affected the emotional atmosphere in* the home. Congestion of city life had made children lose their sense of adventure. The disturbance of recent years had also had an effect upon children. During the war children were harder to manage due to the fact that many fathers were on active service. Notwithstanding these facts, Professor Bailey said: “I have great confidence in modern children. They are grand little' people.”
