MELBOURNE’S POLITEST TRAM CONDUCTOR RETIRES AFTER FORTY YEARS
’ “It’s a pity you haven’t the courtesy of 1229,” an angry woman told a conductor on a crowded Melbourne tramear. She referred to Ern Blumfield, claimed by many travellers on the East Brighton-City run (since 1923) as “the politest conductor in Melbourne.” Small, ruddy-faced, jovial, and active for his 65 years, he has just retired after 40 “lovely” years with the Tramways Board (without a day’s sickness j. The secret to “Blum’s” success has been: Call at stops; help the aged and mothers with children; create friendships among passengers; move passengers along, quietly and without officiousness; treat everyone the same, obligingly and with a smile; speak without rudeness: love and kindness.
