PICKLED PELT PRICES DECLINE

The sixth and final sale for the season of pickled sheep and lamb pelts under the Pickled Sheep and Lamb Pelts Emergency Regulations was held in Wellington on September 1 before a representative bench of buyers. Offerings totalled 125 lots comprising 42,263 dozen sheep , and 72,304 dozen lamb pelts. Prices generally showed a marked decline on those of the previous sale and indicated that buyers’, limits had been reduced by considerably more than the allowance to meet the effect of the reduction in the rate of exchange. * Prices for sheep pelts were on average approximately 30 per cent below those of the last sale whilst those for. lamb pelts declined by approximately 40 per cent. The average prices for both classes of pelts were the lowest recorded at any sale during the period of operation of the Pickled Sheep and Lamb Pelts Emergency Regulations. The full range of prices follow: ( Auckland District: Sheep 77s 6d to 95s per dozen, lambs 38s 6d to 44s 6d per dozen; Hawkes Bay-East Coast: Sheep 78s to 90s 6d, lambs 36s 6d to 41s; Wellington-West Coast: Sheep 89s 6d to 103 s, lambs 41s 6d to 50s; Picton-Nelson: Sheep 55s to 575, lambs 36s to 38s; Canter-bury-Otago: Sheep 55s to 78s, lambs 40s 6d to 50c; Southland: Sheep 71s to 87s, lambs 47s'6d to 53s 6d.
