Yehudi Menuhin, whose pianist sister Hephzibah came out of retirement to play at Melbourne Town Hall, was not always as much the vogue as he is at present. On one occasion he was engaged to play at a fashionable Manhattan party and the hostess came up to him and said: “Of course, Mr Menuhin, you won’t be expected to mix with the guests.” “Thanks, Madam,” retorted the violinist politely, looking around rhim. “Then I’ll cut the fee by half.”
