Waitangi Shield League At Ruatoki: South Auckland , Beats Bay of Plenty 29—-20 Bay of Plenty Rugby League representatives, challengers, lost to South Auckland, holders of the Waitangi Shield, by 29 points to 20 on the Ruatoki Domain on Saturday. There was a large crowd. With a superior back line behind a fast pack of forwards, South Auckland proved a little too much for the local lads. The home side was onlysaved from severe defeat by the brilliant individual play of Raymond Hohua and Hepi Biddle in the backs and Monu Tawera and T. Milroy in the forwards. Scorers:— South Auckland (29 points): Martin, 2 tries; Tupaea, McKean, Williams, one try each; Nathan kicked 2 penalty goals; 5 conversions. Bay of Plenty (20 points): Tawera, R. Hohua, 2 tries each; Biddle and Milroy, a try each, 1 conversion. During the evening, Mr Berryfnan, chairman of the South Auckland League, presented medals donated'by the Mt Albert League team for the best back and the best forward in the Waitangi Shield match, recipients being Monu Tawera (forward) and Raymond Hohua (back), both of the Bay of Plenty team. Farmers’ Trading Trophy For the Farmers’ Trading Co’s trophy, Taniwharau thirds, holders, beat Bay of Plenty, challengers, 20—10.

.Trampers’ Sunday Hike On Sunday the Whakatane Tramping Club explored the hills around Whakatane. - Setting off from the Gorge Road, the trampers went up the Gorge to*Mokoroa. There they struck off the road into ;the nearby hills, over them to the Whakatane Trig and on to Otarawaixere, thence to the Bay that lies in between there and Whakatane. After a successful day the party returned home about 5.30 p.m.
