Wairaka Beats “Scratch” Taneatua Team 19-13 In Senior Club Rugby

There was only one senior club Rugby mat'ch at the Domain on Saturday, Wairaka beating a “scratch” Taneatua team 19—13. In the other scheduled game, Waimana defaulted to United. McGougan, Rutherford and G. Goodall, United, turned out to fill the gaps in the Taneatua team, and gave a good account of themselves. First score of the match went to Sisam, who collected a neat try after Rutherford, having cut out his opposite number, handed on the ball to complete a move initiated by Hurran from the base of the scrum, where he was giving his usual consistent service. Semmens converted. Welch tried twice for “potted” goals, but failed to pull it off. A bright piece of opportunism by McGougan, who snatched the ball out of M. Riini’s hands and dashed on for a try gave Semmens his second successful kick at goal, and built the Taneatua tally up to 10—nil at halftime. Wairaka came back fighting after the interval, and bottled their opponents up inside the 25 with consistent forward pressure that paid a dividend when M. Riini gathered up the ball and raced across for his team’s first points. T. Riini converted. A penalty against Welch, right in front of the goal, gave T. Riini his chance to add three more points—Taneatua 10—Wairaka 8. After a number of abortive blind side movements by Taneatua, one of their backs mishandled, and Hudson on Wairaka’s wing, dashed in to gather himself a snappy try. T. Riini failed to convert. Taneatua regained the lead with a penalty goal by Semmens. With' 10 minutes to go, Wairaka’s forwards worked hard and, from a willing scramble, ione of them scored for T. Riini to convert, and another try built the final tally to 19—13. Whakatane Junior Reps Following is the team to play Sacred Heart College at the Domain on Saturday.
