Eerie Spook Story From Stewart Island
An eerie tale of a deserted house on a small islet in Paterson’s Inlet, Stewart Island,"was told to Whakatane Rotorians last week by Rotarian C. H. Brebner, who gave a short talk on the southernmost part of New Zealand. It seems this house was once occupied by a Portuguese, who did not agree with his Maori wife and half-caste daughters. On his death bed he swore he’d come back to haunt them. Well, the story goes that one stormy night, he did come back, so the whole family high-tailed it for Wellington, leaving all their worldly goods—even the remnants of the meal they were eating at the time. Last time Mr Brebner saw it, the house was exactly as they had left it, mouldering food and all. While he was inclined to deprecate the spook idea, he said they must have seen something that gave them a substantial fright. One wonders if they would have acted the same way had they seen the paternal wraith in these days of housing shortage?
