Manawalie School Fancy Dress Dance Features Fascinating Costumes
Last Friday evening the Manawahe school children held their annual Fancy Dress Ball in the Manawahe Hall. The programme consisted of folk dances, songs, recitations and, as a grand finale, a series of Maypole Dances. Although the prevailing influenza had greatly depleted the numbers present at the practices during the preceding fortnight, practically all the children, were present in the evening and gave a very creditable performance to a good gathering of parents and friends. The variety and quality of the fancy dresses, which contributed in a large degree to the success of the evening, reflected much thought and hard work on the part of the parents. The committee was very grateful to Mrs Bowes, who consented to tackle the unenviable task of judging the costumes. At the conclusion of their programme, the children were given supper and the prizes for. the costumes were presented. .In making the presentation Mr Jones, the chairman of the school committee, an-,; nounced that, in view of the enthusiasm shown by the children and their parents, the committee had decided to award consolation prizes of cokes of chocolate to alj, children participating. This gesture was needless to say, very popular with those concerned and was well deserved. Then two of the junior pupils, Jill Jones and Winnie Lambert, on behalf of the committee and the children, presented a bouquet of primroses and violets' to Mrs Reid in appreciation of the assistance she had given in training the children. Thanks were also given to the parents for the support they had given to the Ball and its preparation and to the ladies who so willingly assisted witb the supper.
