Long-Promised Sales Tax Abolition Urged By Mr W. Sullivan
A request to the Minister of Finance to consider the longpromised abolition of sales tax was made in the House of Representatives by Mr W. Sullivan, Bay of Plenty. Was the Minister aware, he asked,, that duty and sales tax on a smalLcar in 1938 was £l9 2s ; lld and in 1948 the. same class of vehicle. • carried duty and sales tax equivalent to .£llß 7s 4d? Replying, the Minister (Mr Nash) *.said the subject would be considered when ,the revenue and expenditure were under examination. The figures submitted were not, a true comparison due to (a) the wide difference between the 1938 and 1948 costs of production in the - "p;nited Kingdom and the United-States;,v(b) the technical superiority of'the later model which warranted a i higher price; and (c) the increased distribution costs in New' Zealand. A more accurate comparison would be to say that a car costing £IOO sterling in the United Kingdom would be subject to New Zealand duty and sales tax amounting to £25 13s in 1938 and £54 10s 6d in 1948.
