Parent-Teacher Association Display Of Modern Books For Children’s Reading

Great interest was shown by parents in the display of books- for children’s reading arranged for the Parent-Teacher Association meeting on Monday night. A loan collection of approximately 80 books had been sent by the National Library and this was supplemented by books from the School Libraries. There were delightful picture- and story books for the younger children with good clear print, excellent format, and illustrations by noted artists.' A display of book covers of good novels for older readers was representative of the work of many wellknown. authors who are writing a series of Junior novels whose standard is equal to their adult work. Books for Homecraft Classes, Clothing and-Oressmaking Courses, Scihence and Agriculture, Geography and Music were also on display and these represented the serious type of reading that was in constant demand by ‘the pupils. Loan collections such as this are available to all School Libraries and Public Libraries which take the Country Library Service. These, collections may embrace books of a wide variety of technical subjects such as required by different groups in the town, and can be borrowed for periods of some months at a time. In addition to this, Libraries belonging to the National Service may borrow books from any other Library in New Zealand. , Unfortunately, however, these facilities are not available to the public of Whakatane as it is not yet linked with the Country Library Service.
