2 N.Z.E.F. Association Wants State House Allocations Based Solely On Need Of Applicants

That the fifty per cent allocation of State houses to ex-servicemen be cancelled and that allocations of all State houses be based upon the need of the applicant, irrespective of whether said applicant be ex-service-man or civilian; and that the present dual administration by two allocation committees* (civilian and rehabilitation) be superseded by one local central committee after the pattern of the existing civilian committees, but with the inclusion of full ex-service representation, was a remit approved by the Dominion Conference of the 2 N.Z.E.F. Association recently.

Other remits dealing with the housing situation and approved by the conference were:— “That this Association learns with disquiet of the continuance in certain districts of luxury building and therefore recommends that building control regulations restricting such luxury building shall be enforced even more vigorously and that penalties for such breaches of the regulations be made still heavier. “That the Government be asked to set up building control committees to issue permits, control and allocate materials, and generally expedite essential building construction and determine the best use of material and manpower.

“That the interest rate on rehabilitation housing, business and farming loans should be reduced forthwith to such small rate as would be sufficient to cover the cost of administration, exclusive of interest charges on funds provided by the State. “That in all centres where a branch of the 2 N.Z.E.F. Association is established, then such branch should have representation on the District Rehabilitation Committee. “That the Government be asked to undertake an immediate survey Of building costs with a view to stabilising the building . industry.”
