Better Weather And Sea Conditions Improve Local Fishing Catches
The sudden snap of good sunny clear weather over the past few days has made a marked improvement in the fishing in Whakatane waters both in the river and out to sea. A number of the commercial boats have gone out and their hauls have been better than they have been for a fair while. The Whakatane Fisheries boat put to sea on Saturday with a. new crew, for the first, time in several months'and the .hauls, though not outstanding, were better than for quite a while. Crayfishing over the. week-end was really good arid one commercial fisherman caught a 44-gallon drum and two sacks from his pots outside the Heads. Four fishermen at the Heads last week-end made excellent catches of Terekihi and Schnapper from the Channel. They took home approximately 200.
There were few fishermen out at Ohope, but a netting party on shore netted some fair hauls of mixed fish.
Whitebaiting in the Whakatane locality has been slow, but Matata residents have had exceptionally good catches which are being sold, for the main part, to, the city markets. '' ,/
