Maize Subsidy
MINISTER MAKES STATEMENT
“In view of the urgent necessity of increased production of maize for poultry and other stock feeding purposes, and following discussibns with maize growers on present increased cost of production, a substantial increase in the subsidy payable has now been recommended by the Economic Stabilisation Commission and approved by the Government,” said the Hon. E. Cullen, Minister of Marketing. * For the past three years the subsidy payable by the Government on all maize sold through the Maize Marketing Committee has been 1/6 per bushel, but for maize produced from crops to be sown during the coming spring and marketed next year the subsidy has now been increased to 3/- per bushel. The basic monthly prices remain at the present rates commencing at 5/6 in July 1949 and rising to 6/2 for deliveries in March to June 1950, but with the subsidy of 3/- added the price to the growers will now range from 8/6 r to 9/2 per bushel, sacks, extra, f.o.b. or on trucks at grower’s station. This represents a very substantial increase and at the above prices maize should prove a profitable crop in all districts climatically suitable for maize production, and Mr Cullen said that it is hoped that special efforts will be made by growers and merchants to obtain a very substantial increase in area this season.'
