Whakatane Electricians Enjoy Film Evening
The film “The Chain Grate Stoker” was introduced by Mr Crafton at the recent film evening conducted by the Whakatane branch of the Electricians’ Institute. The complete testing, and erection of the chain grate stoker from its early introduction to its present-day high standard of efficiency was extensively dealt with in the commentary. , Coal consumption had been reduced from 21bs per K.W.H. to lib per K.W.H. in the present modern efficient boiler. Boiler pressures had risejL as high as.l2oolbs per square inch and capacities as high as half million lbs of steam per hour. Finai temperatures of steam were also up to and over 900 Farenheit. In earlier, times 10 per cent of coal was 'lost in the ash as well as a 15 per cent heat loss in the chimney. This had now been reduced to 1 pqr cent of coal in ash. The manufacture of conveyors, gearboxes and valves was also an interesting feature.
