World Population Growth As Menace To Security

According to Sir Hartley Shawcross, Britain’s Attorney-General, the world is moving slowly towards catastrophe. This is not because of the discovery of atom bombs and germ warfare but because since 1938 the population of the world has im creased by 15Q millions. By the time that babies born today reach maturity the world’s population will be nearly double what it is today—certainly it will be 500 million higher. With all this extra population food production has declined by seven per cent and huge tracts of land have gone out of cultivation. Even if all existing plans are successful by 1951, says Sir Hartley, the world will return to .its 1938 level of food production and there will be 200 million more mouths to feed. Sir Hartley Shawcross used these facts to illustrate the need for increased food production.
