Colourful Locale For Latest Western Saga, Republic’s “Northerner”
Certain American localities, among them the Dakotas, > seem to lend themselves to colourful dramatic sequences, in recounting early American history in the pioneering days of the great West. “The Northerner” is. one more superb example. With the aid of photographs, research and actual, wheatfield scenes filmed in Minnesota and Montana, Republic has brought to the screen another West-
ern saga which will long live as a tribute to author, Carl Foreman. In this fine film, Republic has re-cap-tured the character of the West in 1871 with nostalgic charm. The cast is all that ‘could be desired; starring John Wayne with Vera Hruba Ralston and Walter Brennan. Featured are: Ward Bond, Grant Withers, Mike "Mazurki, Hugo Haas, Ona Munson and Paul Fix. In 1871, Mr and Mrs John Devlin, newly-married couple from Chicago (John Wayne and Vera Hruba Ralston) elope to invade Dakota, where success looks promising. Every incident proves an exciting adventure and the young husband wages a war against a ruthless gang of Crooks, who try to burn out the wheat farmers, drive them out of the country and blame the raids on the Indians.
