Australian Hockey Players Entertained On Monday Night: Dinner & Dance

The Australian Representative hockey players were put on quite a fuss on Monday-night and, in the best manner the town could provide, were treated to a sporting dinner as the guests of the Central Bay of Plenty Hockey Association early in the evening and later to a dance as the guests of the town. All Whakatane appeared to have turned out to ensure they had a good time at the dance. Before attending the dance in the Winter Show building the Australians were entertained ,at a dinner in the Whakatane Hotel. Mr B. S. Barry, Mayor of Whakatane, welcomed them on behalf of the town and thanked them for what they had done for hockey in the short time they had been in the Bay. Mr F. Levy, manager of the visiting team, replied and in a few words expressed the general feeling of the team, that they had had a really good time during their‘short stay in the town. A full toast list was honoured^ At the conclusion of the reception everyone went to the dance. The Central Bay of Plenty Association had really excelled itself in this direction. Everything needed to make a dance go with a swing was there. About the biggest crowd that has attended a dance in the town for a long time tttrned out, the music was good, there was plenty of supper, and loads of fun for everybody: The visitors proved good mixers and the crowd not a bit shy in coming forward. A highlight of the evening was an informal turn by a number of Maori girls singing, and Miss A. Wilson doing a Hula. The Australians before supper turned on a little show of their own with a number of songs. A number of novelties were run, and the winners were Mr Williams and Miss F. Gamble, Monte Carlo, Mr B. Baty and Miss S. McDonald, Spot Waltz, Mr F. Miller and Miss I. Buscke, Lucky Gay Gordons.
