Whakatane W.I. Hears Interesting News Of British Institutes

Mrs Print presided over an excellent attendance at the Whakatane Women’s Institute monthly meeting in the Methodist Hall. Mr Thompson, Secretary to Leper Missions, wrote thanking the members of the Institute for their donation. The monthly letter from the President of the Federation reminded all members of the Home Industries Show to be held in September. Mrs Armstrong asked for greater cooperation by the members in making the show a success. The secretary of the Wingham W. 1., Canterbury, England, wrote thanks to the members of Whakatane W.I. for a parcel, the contents of-which went toward a tea party given to the elderly people, they were entertaining. The secretary, added that members of the Wingham Institute would like to show their gratitude in a practical manner and made some suggestions. After a little discussion, Mrs Sutcliffe proposed and Mrs Patterson seconded that the secretary write stating that some pictures and books on Canterbury would be very acceptable. ’ A letter from the link secretary, G. A. M. Harris, Hollingbourne, East Kent, England, thanked 'the Institute for another parcel. The Hollingbourne Institute is prepared to send to Whakatane Drama Play books. Mrs Sutcliffe was chosen as' delegate to the Dominion Conference. Mrs Murphy read v a satisfactory monthly balance sheet. Eight' members whose birthdays occurred in the month of July were the recipients of shoulder sprays and .the good wishes of the Institute. Mrs Sutcliffe spoke .of the work done and service rendered when she presented a good service badge to the presidnt, Mrs Print, and a long service badge to Mrs Hyde. For emergency funds, it was reported that the card afternoons held every second Wednesday in the month were a success, both socially and financially. Members very much appreciated two songs sung by Mrs Burke “Bl£ss This Home” and “When Song is Sweet.” Following afternoon tea, Mrs Sumner gave a very interesting and instructive talk on “Ante-natal training—for and against.” A very, popular demonstration in the art of making Cellophane into hats was given by Mrs P. Dixon. Golden Thread was again taken by Mrs K. Stewart who spoke on the Institute link, Hollingbourne; East Kent, England. It was interesting to hear that the Hollingbourne Institute held a New Zealand flag presented by the men of the first echelon from New Zealand to Britain, who had camped at Hollingbourne. Competitions:— ' ~ Hospital floral box: Mrs Hanham 1, Mrs Stewart 2. Cake of soap arranged in homemade facecloth: Mrs Larsen 1, Mrs Comer 2. Three lemons: Mrs Norman 1, Mrs Ryde 2. >, All entries for these competitions were donated to the hospital.
