“Untouched By Hand” New Proposed Amendment To Public Health Act
It may soon be an offence for persons handling food for sale to use fingers instead of forks. Draft regulations to this effect have been completed by the Government and are expected to be gazetted this year. The proposed requirements constitute an alteration to the Health Act, which at present does not prohibit the use of fingers but states'that food must be protected from flies and other impurities. The proposed new law will cover persons in all types of premises where food is sold to the public. At present there is no law to prevent employees in restaurants, milk bars, hotels and other food shops from removing food from the windows and display cases with their hands. The coming regulations are expected to be sufficiently comprehensive to ensure that no prepared food for public consumption is contaminated by human contact.
