Whisky-4s a Bottle

Whisky was sold at 4s a bottle—but that was at Milton, 36 miles south of Dunedin, in 1865. Gin was only 6d more than whisky, while sugar, cost 53d per lb, boots 14s a pair, and a dozen cups and saucers could be obtained for the same price. These bargain prices of other years were brought to light in the “Retailer of New Zealand” in the course of a claim by the proprietor of a general retail store at Milton (Mr J. B. Gray) that his firm was one of the oldest in New Zealand, dating back to 1862.
