COMPETENCY
Sir, —Competency, according to the dictionary, means sufficient to furnish the necesaries of life without “superfluity.” Nothing succeeds like success. A section of society termed “middle class” has succeeded more or less in taking the bull of opportunity by the horns and time by the forelock. The remainder of humanity (minus the superfluitists) has been allotted the bull’s tail and at times its hindmost fetlock or, in other words, left in the lurch—which is the nautical term for a ship in a heavy sea. Key men in all strata of society have tried to form religious, political and parochial combines for the benefit of their-fellows. Nations have drawn together with the same object, but there has always been the rift within the lute that makes the music of peace and unanimity mute. This is the signal for a discordant pandemonium, ending in war, pestilence and famine for those least responsible for their sufferings. The powers that be have professed a will for peace more definitely than ever, but though the spirit is willing the flesh is weak, and yields to the ageold temptation of passion, envy, lust and pride, which are the four aces that enable the Devil to take his tricks. There is only one power that can effectively combat the said evils inherent in individuals and nations. The unseen spirit of Him who was triumphant over the world the flesh the devil, death and the grave, and left a glorious legacy with His last words on earth “Lo, I am with you always.” Yours etc., H. SERGANT.
