USE OF STEAM FOR GENERATING POWER

Several New South Wales shire councils are planning to build theirs own power stations. Coonabarabran Shire Council recently decided to join the £500,000 Ulan electricity scheme. Under this scheme five councils .will combine to form -• a County council to control a steam generating plant at Ulan. The plan was launched because councils see little prospect of bulk power supplies . from any existing station for many years. At Ulan, 16 miles from Gulgong, there is a coal seam 20 feet thick. The Mines Department estimates that there are 15,000,000 tons of coal on the field. Water supply for the boilers is sufficient to generate 25,000 kilowatts. The initial plant, however, will generate 5000 k.w. Councils believe that the plan will makje rural life more attractive and help to check population drift to the city. .
