Big Entries In Poultry Show

JUDGE COMMENTS ON HIGH QUALITY

Entries from Auckland, Hamilton, Hawkes Bay and the King Country, together with many local exhibitors, vied for honours at the Bay of Plenty Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Club’s Winter Show held at Whakatane on Friday and Saturday. The classes most contested were the Rhode Island Reds, Orpingtons and White Leghorns, and a very strong entry in the duck sections.

The judges for the day were Mr W. Hadwen (poultry section) and Mr G. Drayson (pigeons and cage birds). Commenting on the quality of entries in his case the judge of the pigeon and cage bird section said that though the quantity was small the quality was exceptionally high especially in the Budgerigar section. The winner of the pigeon class a Pigmy Pouter Owned by Miss Y. Hanson of Auckland is the holder of the North Island championship and it would win in its class in any show. He awarded a racing Homer owned by a Hamilton fancier the Best Pigeon of the show, for its overall capabilities and achievements.

The- Poultry section judge, Mr Hadwen, said if the Club were to keep up its present rate of improvement, in a few years it should be able to compete on even ground with other clubs all over the country. The birds in all classes were well up to the standard, with the exception of the Minorcas. The most outstanding bird of the day in the Utility class was a Black Orpington pullet. It was nominated* the Best Bird of the Show. In nearly all the classes it was very hard to distinguish the winners in the sections. ■ The Barred Rocks were very good type birds-and well up to standard. Rhode Island Reds were excellent birds of good quality, and the winning cockerell could .compete with any birds of class in larger shows. Langshans were of good type and quality. The White Leghorns were very good birds and he found it hard to place the winners. Minorcas were not quite up to standard. Australorps were of fine quality, and the winning bird would do well in any other show. In the Game classes, the Old English Game were a very fine type of bird. Bantam class were fair as a whole, but could be improved on. “This is a very young show,” Mr Hadwen said, “and if the present standard of improvement continues, in' a few years it should be a really good show. There are lots of good birds aind, . with good mating and care they should, improve a lot for the next show.” North Island Championships Utility: Rhode Island Reds, G. McFarland.
