Ohope Might Have Own School Soon

Progress is snally being made by the Whakatane School Committee in its schemes for a separate and wellequipped school at Ohope. A party of committee members including the chairman, Mr L. D. Lovelock, the secretary, Mr J. H. Duthie and Mr F. Cutler, accompanied the Board’s architect, Mr Miller, and the Headmaster, Mr I. B. Hubbard, on a tour of prospective building sites for the new school. After a thorough inspection the Caledonian sports ground area was temporarily abandoned and a better site at the Eastern end of the beach was inspected. The committee and Mr Miller felt that with the expansion that will come at Ohope the site viewed was most suitable as it would place the school in a very central position. However, as the township has a long way to go to warrant a larger school, it was thought that it would be advisable to place the school temporarily in a more central position. The site selected is the Domain Picnic ground opposite the Caledonian sports ground which has an area of approximately if acres. It is proposed to erect a pre-fabricated school on this site and to get the Ohope school committee in office as quickly as possible. When the school population of the beach reaches a sufficient figure, the permanent school on the selected site will be built.
