A wedding of widespread interest was solemnised on Saturday, June 5, at the Presbyterian Church, Upper Hutt, when Joan Elizabeth, daughter of John Gillanders and the late Anne Gillanders (nee Davies) Waimana, Bay of Plenty, was married to Derek, second son of Mr and Mrs Barnes, Karori, Wellington. The bride, who entered the Church with her father, looked very charming in a cream French lace frock. Her veil was held in place with a spray of velvet lilies and she carried a bouquet of cream feathery Chrysanthemums and maidenhair fern. She was attended by Misses Patricia Ross, of Taihape, Zeta Thompson, of Wairoa, and Valerie Salmon, of Upper Hutt, and little Stephanie Parker, of Auckland, cousin of the bride, was flower girl. They were all gowned alike in eau-de-nil Swiss organdie, with cape sleeves, slightly gathered bodices and very flared skirts with cross drapings and bows. They wore halos’ of daphne, mauve and pink Chrysanthemums and stock bouquets were of the same tonings. Mr Gillanders, brother of the bride, acted as best man and the groomsmen were Mr Gubb of Karori, and Mr W. Roberts, of Cromwell, Central Otago. On leaving the. Church the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe by Denise Brien. Afterwards a reception was held at the R.S.A. Hall at Upper Hutt. The guests were received by Mr Gillanders and Mrs Parker of Auckland, the bride’s aunt and Mr and Mrs Barnes Snr. The tables were tastefully decorated.The bride wore a Marina green wool suit with tan accessories and astrakhan coat as a going away outfit. The newly-weds will make their future home in Lower Hutt.
