Duels Need Smart Feet

Gene Kelly has made the discovery that a role in a non-musical film, especially if it is M.G.M.’s “The Three Musketeers,” can require as much rehearsing as do the dance numbers of his musicals. In the Technicolour picturisation of the Dumas novel Kelly must fight eight duels. Each duel must be worked out in advance in such detail that a total of ten days rehearsal is required to perfect the footwork for each fight. That’s as much time as Gene ordinarily spends on one of his intricate dances.
