Critical Review Of Central Bay Hockey Teams’ Gisborne Visit

(By “Asbeen”) The trip to Gisborne was of interest to the players from the Bay of Plenty. They had the opportunity of seeing the way hockey should be played. The Gisborne women’s “A” team and the men!s “A” team played Hawke’s Bay and the standard of hockey played by these teams surprised the majority of the players from this district. Bay of Plenty women took the field very late in the afternoon and it was dark before the game was finished. Of the Bay team B. Matchett played an outstanding game, N. Howell at back was very sound, Haimona was definitely not up to her usual standard. The half line could be improved considerably, the wingers K. Hunia and Thompson have the habit of holding on to the ball too long instead of - centring before they reach the circle which gives the opposing backs a chance to clear. Of the Gisborne team Bilson the left wing was the most outstanding player on the field. The men’s game was very fast and interesting. The Bay tearm will have to be. considerably strengthened before meeting the Australians. The goalkeeper was just ordinary. Of the backs, Hill was a tower of strength and settled down to play a sound game. Campbell was an absolute failure. Of the halves, Cox was sound, but had the misfortune to get badly hurt and had to retire early in the game. Ellis replaced Cox at centre half and performed well. A m i improved when moved to the left, this position being most suited to his play. Corbett held his own. Of the forwards, Stringer was perhaps the most prominent. Civil, as centre, played a sound game, following up fast and leaving nothing to chance> Rigden, left wing, put across some good centres and opened up the game. Borden and Fraser were failures on the day.
