Central Bay Hockey Representatives’ Success Against Gisborne Teams

Both men’s and women’s hockey teams which represented Central Bay of Plenty against Poverty Bay teams at Gisborne on Saturday played better hockey than their opponents. Teams from Central Bay of Plenty were' matched against B grade representative sides of the Poverty Bay Association and wins were recorded by the visitors in each division. Bay of Plenty men had the upper hand of their opponents in the latter stages, although the stick work on both sides left much to be desired. The final ( score, four goals to one, gave a fairly good indication of the run of the play. Visitors showing out in attack and defence, according to their role, were K. Civil, G. Bowden and P. Fraser, forwards, J. Stringer, wing, T. Ellis, centre half, and B. Hill, full-back. Play in the first half was indecisive until the final 10 minutes, although the exchanges had been fairly lively. In those final few minutes before the changeover, D. Lewis had a run on the wing and got a goal home through the defence of the Bay of Plenty goalie. Bay of Plenty replied with pressure, and Civil equalled the score when he found the home goalie out of position. N. Rigden followed up shortly after with a forceful shot that went high into the net. The visitors took charge in the second spell and increased their two-one lead when Stringer netted the ball from a penalty corner and later Civil scored again, a good opportunist goal. Bay of Plenty women took the decision over Poverty' Bay B by threegoals to one. There was not a great deal between these, teams, but it was found that the Poverty Bay forwards were not combining at all well and were often found out of position. E. Chamberlain, the Bay of Plenty centre, gave a sterling display, and K. Hunia also was outstanding. The Poverty Bay defence was very sound, particularly that of Mrs R. Harvey. Goals for Bay of Plenty were scored by R. Matchitt (2) and E. Chamberlain, while the Poverty Bay goal was registered by Miss Billson, inside right, after a notable lone run down the field.
