Egypt’s Popular Stars

Joan Crawford has been advised by the Journale d’Egypte that she was voted the most popular actress seen on Egyptian screens during 1947. The Egyptian magazine, published in Cairo, advised the star by cable that she was named winner of its “Movie Fan Clubs Referendum” and that “Mildred Pierce” was voted the best film. Word was also received from Cairo by Cary Grant that he was named the best actor for his performance in “Night and Day,” the technicolour life of Cole Porter, directed by Michael Curtiz, who wate the director for “Mildred Pierce.” W.B.

“Bull-Fight” With Goat

Gilbert Roland looked at the goat used in Allied Artists’ “Black Gold” and started to laugh. It was just a plain goat and there was nothing funny about it. “What’s so funny?” asked Tony Quinn. “Nothing . . . nothing at all. I just thought of something,” Roland replied. But a moment afterward he explained. As a young boy, he had wanted to be a famous bull-fighter, and he trained hard for the career he thought one day would be his. “But my training wasn’t the real thing,” he said. “You see, I used to fight a goat . . . not a bull; and I never /got very far toward my hopedfor career, either.” B.E.F.
