Young New Zealanders’ Cup
PRESENTATION AT REGENT THEATRE On Saturday afternoon the Regent Theatre at Whakatane rang to the cheers of the local Young New Zealanders’ Club which had gathered to welcome Mr A. Flett, known to them as “Uncle Freddo,” public relations officer for Kerridge-Odeon Theatres, who had come from Auckland to present them with the Young New Zealanders’ Cup which they had won by their efforts to aid others less fortunate than themselves.
“The Whakatane club is the symbol of all the Young New Zealanders’ Clubs throughout the Dominion,” said Mr Flett, in his address. “This is the first time that this cup has been presented, and Whakatane, by its work throughout the past year, has proved that it has justly deserved the honour. Its generous donation to the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society has shown that. Of 59 clubs and 40,000 children this club has done the most good for the past year.” If, he continued, parents all over the world were to carry out the ideals of the club there would be no more wars, but only goodwill on earth. After Mr Flett’s address and the p: esentation of the cup, the afternoon resolved into a community sing, with brief addresses by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr C. S. Armstrong and Mr R.i Chapman, Captain of the Whakatane Young New Zealanders’ Club.
Items, accompanied by. Miss Y. McNaughton, pianist of the club, were presented by Kevin Lysaght on the piano-accordion, Miss M. Guptill two solos, Rangi and Keri a solo each and Bruce Larmer, a recitation, and items by the Club Girls’ Sextet.
