Have Wasps Double Life Cycle In N.Z.?

The opinion that the wasps, which have been so numerous in the Thames Valley this year, have a double life cycle in New Zealand compared with a single cycle in England has been expressed by Mr W. H. Cheale of Netherton. Mr Cheale said that a Komata farmer confirms this opinion in that recently he dug out a wasp’s nest and found that it was devoid of all wasps or grubs. The nest was absolutely empty. Mr Cheale considers that the nest was an early one and had completed its life cycle in January when the farmer first noticed that the wasps were no longer using the nest. The last hatching of wasps in the life cycle of a nest are mainly queens, said Mr Cheale, and in January when these hatched out each of the queens, possibly over 1000, could start another nest instead of hibernating for the winter as they did in colder countries. The opinion that the treatment being used at present was useless was also expressed by Mr Cheale. Mr Cheale predicted that the extermination of wasps would soon become a, full-time job in New Zealand if the wasps continued to breed as they are doing at present.
