FROM DISTRICT PLAYING FIELDS

United Shade Taneatua In Hard-Played Match: Forwards’ Killing Pace

A killing speed in the forward work characterised the play in the United-Taneatua Rugby Football match played at the Whaaktane Domain on Saturday. Solid and steady running .by both sets of backs made the play from that section fairly even with exception of the fullbacks. Goodall, though playing a grand game, was outclassed by the Taneatua and Whakatane rep. fullback, Welch. Hooking advantage and a faster get-away by the backs won the game for the United by 11 to nil. Teams:—

United: R. Goodall; McGougan, Cave, Hunt; Rutherford, De Lacey; Morpeth; Rolfe, G. Goodall, Collins, Thom, Gardiner (retired in the- first half through a slight injury), Stewart, Mundy, Dines, Cassidy. Taneatua: Welch; Sisam, L. McCready, R. Hill; H. Hill, S.' McCready; Hurran; Balk Cain, Hunt, Anderson, Semmens, Rawson, Hayward, Shaw. Opening in the first half with terrific speed and hard play both sets of forwards showed that it could be anyone’s game. Dines, hooking for United, was at his best however arid returned the ball very fast from the scrums to give his backs the quick get-away that won them the game. A very spectacular back movement from the scrum and along a fast set of backs to Cave gave United a 3-nil lead after a few minutes’ play. Tane-

atua, working very hard from the cover of a safe fullback, started some very good moves from the rucks but seemed dogged by a little bad luck apart from United defence and were very unlucky not to go over on a number of occasions.

Getting the ball from a ruck inside the Taneatua 25 United threw the ball around and allowed Cave to score again, McGougan adding two more points. A little more training in the forward dribbling work would stand the Taneatua team in good stead in their future games; a few good rushes were spoilt and lost to the side by this lack and also a little more conscientious supporting of the man with the ball would help. Half-time score was 8-nil in United’s favour.

Resuming play Taneatua went all out to score and the United team had a hard time defending, until R. Goodall put in a very good clearing kick to take the play to the halfway line. Taneatua worked very hard in an attempt to get up to the line again and a very neat solo effort by Semmens from a ruck and a dribble right up the field to within 10 yards of the goal was checked by the ball running into touch. From the line out the United backs got the ball and went ; on down the field and after another ruck McGougan went on to score a lucky try. From this point Taneatua took over, and it was unlucky that they did not open a scoring account. The final score was 11 nil. Scorers:— United (11 points): Cave two tries, McGougan one try and a conversion. ; Taneatua nil.

Poroporo, Outplayed By Heavier Paroa Team, Proved Game Losers

Outplayed by a heavier team with better combination, Poroporo lost gamely to Paroa, 12—0. Paroa scored only two tries, the other six points coming from two penalty goals. Teams:— Paroa: R. Laurie; K. Wano, A. Martin, P. Wahapango; N. Goodwin, J. Forbes; J. Lafferty; J. Dodd, R. Kingi, K. Wahapango, R. Cleland, T. Hona, P. Dick, M. Jensen. Poroporo: B. Huta; P. Merito, R. Kingi, W. Bidois; T. Tahawera, R. Kotua, W. Paul, P. Watarawi, S. Moeke, G. Hokianga, T. ; Tunui, T. Clay, S. Paul, B. Ngoungou. Early in the match, it looked as though Poroporo would draw first blood. Though lighter in the forwards, they made up for their lack of beef with plenty of sting, and the backs, ably generalled by Kotua, who played a heady game, looked really dangerous at times. Bidois was unlucky to fall in taking a pass that would have given a certain try, a certain amount of carelessness though the team spoiled other good opportunities. With the loss of the half, W. Paul, who retired' with a leg injury, Poroporo lost their territorial ascendancy while waiting for the replace-

ment, H. Clay, to come on. S. Paul moved back behind the scrum, and proceeded to put on a shade better show than his brother had done in the early stages, but once the ball left Kotua, the attack was weak. Ben Huta was a great asset in defence. forwards most frequently in the picture in a hard-working but not well-combined pack were T. Clay, Moeke and Tunui. Though Poroporo are, entitled to full marks as game and sporting losers, they were out of their depth against Paroa’s combination on the day. With the advantage of weight in the pack, Paroa found little need for the outside backs, though Wano put in some solid runs at times. The forwards missed Ranapia’s leadership, but none the less showed flashes of real form, Jensen, Cleland and Ratahi combining in a series of short-passing rushes that never failed to worry the defenders. Paroa’s backs shuffled around a bit, trying out various positions, and got good results with Dodd at the base of the scrum snapping out straight passes to Goodwin, who showed out as the brightest back on the field. *R. Laurie, who started at fullback, and later came up to centre when Goodwill went back in the closing stages, was safe,' but seemed to be feeling a weak angle. Though they have played better football this season, Paroa’s victory was by no means a walk-over. They worked hard to win. Scorers:—

Paroa (12 points): J. Dodd, two penalty goals; K. Wano and Martin, a try each. Mr J. Whitehead was the referee.
