OUR BEAUTY SPOTS
Sir, —I read with interest an article under the heading “What of our beauty spots.” I quite agree that the Heads is a beauty spot and very pleasant place to spend a few leisure hours. But, what of the approach to the Heads?
May I suggest that the road could be greatly by being made much wider and tar-sealed. Looking down on waterfront from Hillcrest one can see all the possibilities of a very attractive. Marine Parade if only those unsightly mudflats were fulled in. v Whakatane could have municipal baths with hot and cold sea water, a rest room, children’s paddling pool, a band stand, a sand shell, a skating rinkin fact everything that the Marine Parade at Napier has.
I really think Whakatane, with its flow of visitors each holiday season, does deserve a little more attention.
About 30 years ago the late Dr Wadmore and the late Mr Peter Mairs organised a Beautifying Society, and canvassed the whole district for funds, seeds, plants and shrubs. I think most residents contributed and those gentlemen personally attended to the formation of lawns, gardens, and the planting of trees in the streets, also converting over our beautiful rock from a dirty rubbish dump into what it now is, and erecting ®the fine shelter at the bus stand. Since the passing of those pioneers no one seems to take any interest in what most appeals to the visitors who year after year honour our town and beaches. Then there are the existing rest rooms. They are really anything but a credit to our town —no wonder indeed our visitors go away disgusted. Cannot something be done to remedy this state of affairs and so retrieve our town’s waning respect. - Yours etc., PROGRESS.
