Fast on the Flat
The Defaulter—Disdain gelding Detain, owned Canterbury, is engaged in the Great Northern Hurdles at 9.3. As he is faster on the flat than most jumpers his chances of a victory are highly assessed by Southern sportsmen.
Racing Into Form By his galloping efforts at Te Aroha and Te Rapa Valley Boy has made considerable improvement, and he is being considered in respect to the Cornwall Handicap. As one of the best winter performers in the Auckland Province he may be difficult to head off. A Recovery It is anticipated that Brown Derby will compete at the Auckland Winter Meeting. His convincing victory at the Te Aroha fixture last month clearly showed he is not averse to galloping on a heavy track. Side Stepping The veteran Whackie, who may soon have to be pensioned off, competed in the Otaki Steeplechase, and showed his dislike of the obstacles by running off. He refused to be pulled up quickly, as he probably thought he would again be asked to negotiate the big jumps. Foi; Ellerslie Hawke’s Bay is sending its speedy galloper, Citation, by Night Raid; — Follow On to Ellerslie for the Cornwall Handicap. The chestnut five-year-old is expected to race at least prominently. The Lap Line One of the most promising hurdlers in England is a close relation to the famous Phar Lap. This is Paracutin by Blenheim—Nea Lap, sister to the champion. He won at his first two starts in England, where he carried the Whitney colours of California.
The Great Northerns Present favourites for the' Great Northern Steeplechase- are Good Armour, Brookby Song and Page’s Raid. For the G.N. Hurdles those most in demand are Corineus, Boolamskee and Hunting Mac.
Confidently Expected A jumper that is expected to win important hurdle events during the winter is the Trentham trained Provider by Foxbridge—Llangollen. So far he has not been over-raced, and this fact should be all in his favour. Jon Rosa Improving It appears that Jon Rosa, by Nizami—Lucy Rose,. has decided to show Te Rapa track watchers that if he likes he can muster up speed. Last week he registered capable gallops in the heavy going much better than he has been showing with the colours up.
In the Sale List Included in the list of thoroughbreds to be submitted on Friday of this week at Greenlane are recent winners in Thornton Hall, Persian Garden, and Driving Creek, also Donnybrook, Good Company and Kuku Nui. Well Placed
In the Winter Hurdles at Te Rapa the bracketed pair Pimlico and Morocco, owned by Messrs Jerratt and Meikle, of Hastings, won the respective divisions in big fields. The art of placing was evident.
