Public Not Interested In Its Own Safety?
When the flooded Whirinaki stream made the Bailey bridge dangerous for traffic it was closed by order of the County Engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, but, according to Cr J. Wilson’s report to Tuesday’s County Council meeting, keeping it closed was not so easy. The Council now intends to lift a span out to keep the bridge free of traffic until another span can be obtained and the bridge made safe. According to Cr Wilson, determined travellers not only ignored notices, but even removed barriers to enable themselves to make the risky crossing.
