Whakatane County Council Will Increase General Rate By 5/8d

An increase of f d in the general rate was agreed to by the Whakatane County Council on Tuesday on the recommendation of its finance committee. Such a new rate will yield £2,500 in extra revenue.

Discussing the committee’s recommendation, the chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, pointed out that, though a rise in the existing rate was contemplated, it would not be as high as it had been in the past.

However, on account of unexpected flood damage as well as generally increased costs, it would be found necessary to increase the general rate by |d to 4£d, making the total rates 7id on the unimproved value. Cr D. C. Butler supported the chairman’s remarks pointing out that it was impossible to maintain and expand County services with ■costs increased all around without increasing the rate.
