Austerity Luncheon Dramatises Europe’s Need

A luncheon preparing for the Tennessee campaign for American Overseas Aid (United Nations Appeal for Children) turned into a major surprnse for all those who attended the affair on February 27, including Governor Jim Nance McCord, State Campaign Chairman Paul Garrett, mayors of principal cities and scores of campaign workers. Waiters carried in huge trays, loaded with dishes, each covered with a silver dome. The dishes were placed before the guests—and the domes removed. The meal consisted of:, A tiny square of meat (exactly 100 grams), a small pat of oleomargarine, a serving of bread, one small glass of skimmed milk and one vitamin tablet. Beside each plate was placed a slip of paper, asking: “How would you like to have one-third of this meal for breakfast-; another onethird for lunch and another onethird for dinner.” Speakers emphasised that even less food often represents the whole day’s consumption of people in need areas, and campaign workers pledged themselves to maximum efforts in behalf of the Appeal.
