New Tramping Club Plans-National Park Trip Next Month

On Friday night a small but nevertheless enthusiastic body of people met in the Borough Council Chambers, and the outcome -was the formation of the Whakatane Tramping Club, due to the endeavours of Mr Karl Mayclair. This is a body unique to this district and should appeal to all those persons who like the wide open spaces and appreciate the beauties of nature as seen in any out-of-the-way places. Officers elected were: President, Mr W. P. Tyssen; secretary-treasur-er, Mr R. Herbison; chief guide, Mr K. Mayclair, hon. guide, Mr Dahm. It is proposed to hold business and social meetings fortnightly when future activities will be planned arfti also to hold day and week-end excursions on alternate week-ends. >■

A day ti'ip covering places of local interest is planned for May 30 and a trip to National Park is mooted for King’s Birthday week-end. ’The trip to National Park- will be of particular interest. Club members will travel by. service car and. train to Ohakune from where they will proceed to the Ohakune or Blythe Hut on the south western slopes of Mt. Ruapehu. Here it is hoped to meet the Hutt Valley Tramping Club, which, incidentally has a membership exceeding 1500. An ascent of Ruapehu will be made from, there and if time and weather permits skiing will be attempted. The party will then proceed in an easterly direction across long tussock country to the Desert Road and thence north to the Waihahonu Hut. Mt. Ngaruahoe will be assailed ,and a further stop will be made at the Mongatepopo Hut on the north western approaches to Mt. Ngauruhoe. The party will then proceed to climb Mt. Tongariro viewing such places of interest as the Blue Lake, the Red Crater and Ketetahi Hot Springs. Members will then proceed back to Natiorial Park station and entrain for home.
