New Zealand Consumers Double Labour Force
New Zealand has 1,800,000 consumers. More than half this number are children, housewives and the aged. The effective labour force totals 727,000 comprising 540,000 men and 187,000 women.
To supply goods and services for nearly 2,000,000 consumers, the working population is divided, broadly,, into a number of specialised activities.
There are 178,000 engaged in the farming industry, 180,000 in factories and 33,000 in building and construction. It requires 66,000 people to transport goods and carry people to and from work, and 112,000 others to distribute goods through retail stores and provide commercial services such as banking and insurance. Public administration and professional services account for 88,000 workers. Hotel and personal services employ 57,000, and there are 9,000 members in the Armed Services.
