Proposed New Rubbish Dump
Residents Of Louvain Street Express Concern
Residents of Louvain Street are concerned about the new rubbish dump that the Borough Council proposes to open on the vacant land beyond their back yards. A letter on the subject, signed by Mr P. L. Sharman and 20 other residents, objecting to the establishing of the dump, has been sent to the Borough Council, and to the Beacon.
The text of the letter is:— “Having interviewed all residents of properties backing on the proposed site, I find that all are concerned with the prospects of having the present dump shifted nearer our back doors. We all know it was the Council’s intention, as soon as possible, to do away with that unsightly and unsanitary spot in the centre of the town. When finally closed, we naturally thought a new area would be found away fr,om the shopping and residential centre.
“It is quite true, as was pointed out to me, that the Council’s intentions were advertised in the local paper of June, 1947, and objections called for within the prescribed forty days, but on reading that advertisement and showing it to other residents of the street, we all unanimously agreed that had the advertisement been worded in what may be termed plain language, our objections would have been filed
immediately. However, owing to the layman’s knowledge of Government Acts being small, this was allowed to pass. Having been troubled severely with rats and flies etc. from the previous dump I would appreciate knowledge of how your Council intends to overcome this nuisance that will undoubtedly occur with a rubbish dump, controlled or otherwise. “Hrerewith is enclosed a list of signatures of other residents of this street on whose behalf I am acting.”
