China Inland Missioner Addresses League Of Mothers’ Monthly Meeting
Mrs Gow presided at the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers held in Whakatane recently. A good attendance was recorded. The meeting opened with the singing of the League Hymn and the Rules and Objects. Sunday, May 9 being Mother’s Day all the members will be attending the Mother’s Day service to be held at the Methodist Church.
Mrs Te Hira Ferguson delighted the meeting with her singing of “Keep On Believing” to the accompaniment of Mrs Lysaght. The guest speaker for the meeting was Doctor R. Howie who spoke on his impressions of China gained as a missionary doctor. Before the Japanese invasion of China there had been efficient postal rail, air and shipping - services as well as some electricity schemes, but the Doctor added, not nearly enough for today’s needs. Mention was also made of the New Zealand industrialist , missionary Rewi Alley. The speaker was interned for three years and during the time he said the compounds organised themselves into study groups, sports groups and it was only this that kept a lot of them sane through the long internment, and the Red Cross food parcels were the only things that kept them alive, he concluded. Mrs Gow thanked the speaker for his address and the singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting.
