Ohope Sanitation Scheme Dropped By League: Poor Attendance At Meeting

The proposals for the improvements to the sanitary arrangements at Ohope that were to be discussed by the public at the annual general meeting of the Ohope Progress League held on Tuesday night were discarded by the meeting because of the lack of public support. Of over 400 residents only 24 people attended.

Speaking on the next item on the agenda, the president, Mr F. Cutler, said that the junior life saving group that had been formed recently had started off very well, but gradually the numbers had decreased until the instructors found difficulty in getting a team together to practice. The junior section, Mr Cutler went on, was vital to the continued existence of the senior club and the unhappy necessity of having a life-saving team on the beach had been strongly emphasised on several occasions over the last few years, and it was a duty of the parents to see that their children, if members, always attended. Lengthy discussion on the subject of improvements to the Ohope main road and the road through the beach, resulted in a resolution that the executive write a*-letter to the County Council urging an endeavour to get the Whakatane-Ohope-Opotiki road declared a main highway. The meeting was of the opinion that if this were done the League would know in what direction to bend it’s efforts for the improvements of the Beach. Before the meeting started on general business the chairman, Mr C. H. Brebner, asked the meeting to stand in silence for a short while in respect to the late Messrs. Allen and Dowling. The following officers were elected: President, Mr F. Cutler; secretary, Mr Mahy. The executive comprises Messrs. H. Armstrong, E. R. Marryatt, C. Gordon, R. Herdman, C. H. Brebner, D. C. Williams, L. Coker, W. Harris, W. Clark. ■
