Gandhi's Symbolic Gift
Gandhi spent half an hour daily for 65 days working on his handoperated spinning-wheel to complete the yarn for the tablecloth which he spun and wove from the best native cotton to send to Princess Elizabeth on the eve of her wedding. It took him nine days to .weave the cloth, using only his deft hands and four bamboo sticks. The cloth weighed 14 ounces, and cost just 19s. Up to the last, when GovernorGeneral Lord Louis Mountbatten carried the gift to London, Gandhi kept news of it a close secret. When the story broke it caused a wave of excitement throughout India, the reason being that the Mahatma had never before in his life made a present on any occasion. When Pandit Nehru married his beautiful wife, Kamala, Gandhi officiated at the wedding ceremony and said that was his gift.
