Chain Of Steel Towers To Take Waikato Power Through North Island
The construction of steel towers through the heart of the North Island to carry a 220,000-volt power line, which will make possible the economical transmission of electricity from the generating nest in the Waikato to the consuming districts of Auckland and Wellington, will begin in June or July, said the district electrical engineer of the State Hydro-Electric Department in Palmerston North last Friday. The survey of the line has been completed and work on the construction of the master sub-station at Bunnythorpe is progressing satisfactorily. Approximately 18,000 tons of steel will be required for the construction of the towers. It is anticipated that it will take until 1951 to complete the whole reticulation project.
